The KONZIL was based on lived artistic encounters and proximity. A hybrid performance festival will bring together performers, artists, and theorists to "1 Month of Experimental Work" in October 2021. In 1979, the performance artist Boris Nieslony invited colleagues to the small exhibition space of the Künstlerhaus Hamburg. It was the precedent of the KONZIL and laid the foundations for the Stuttgart gathering in 1981. Artists came to Hamburg and reflected in 30 days on h an de ln – how to "act" – as an artist and as a human.

In discussions, performances and talks, dimensions of h an de ln will be debated, explored, tested, denied as well as acted upon; open-ended. h an de ln in the field of performance art is a huge field, historically as well as theoretically. However, October 2021 is less about tracing the excesses of the verb. Rather, the concern is to take up the question of what "to act" currently means, is, should be, from the present and in distinction to what has been. When is the time for action and when is the time for refusal? How does the medial transmission or documentation of an action affect it? What rhythm does action require, what warmth, what atmosphere? When is action experienced as valuable, how is it to be acted in the present? In art, in systems, in collectives, in private as well as in public?

The archive will provide research material from its collection. Screenings, lectures, talks complement the 1-month hybrid program. What emerges or does not emerge is determined by the encounters.

Das KONZIL lebte vor 40 Jahren von der künstlerischen Begegnung und Nähe. Es endete am 30. September 1981. Dort setzen wir an, doch rufen kein weiteres KONZIL aus. Manche Dinge lassen sich nicht wiederholen, schon gar nicht in Zeiten der Pandemie. Ab dem 30. September 2021 sind Performerinnen und Performer zu 1 Monat experimentelles Arbeiten nach Köln eingeladen, dem heutigen Sitz des International Performance Art Archives. 1979 lud hierzu Boris Nieslony Kolleg:innen in den Kleinen Ausstellungsraum des Künstlerhaus Hamburg ein. Es war der Vorläufer für das KONZIL und legte die Grundsteine für das Stuttgarter Zusammenkommen. Künstler:innen kamen nach Hamburg und reflektierten in 30 Tagen wie man „handelt“, als Künstler:in und Mensch.

In Gesprächen, Recherchen, Ortserkundungen werden Dimensionen des h an de ln diskutiert, erforscht, in der Zeit erprobt, verweigert wie ver-h an de lt; ergebnisoffen. h an de ln ist im Bereich der Performance Art ein riesiges Feld, historisch wie theoretisch. Im Oktober 2021 geht jedoch weniger darum, die Auswüchse des Verbs nachzuzeichnen. Vielmehr ist das Anliegen, aus der Gegenwart heraus und in Abgrenzung zu Gewesenem die Frage aufzugreifen, was „zu handeln“ aktuell bedeutet, ist, sein sollte. Muss Kunst h an de ln? Nachdem in den vergangenen Monaten die handelnden Gewohnheiten außer Kraft gesetzt waren, ist h an de ln einmal mehr eine menschliche, eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Frage. „Wie zu handeln“ berührte als persönliche Herausforderung jede und jeden.

Das Archiv wird aus seinen Beständen Recherchematerial bereitstellen. Screenings, Vorträge, Talks komplementieren das 1-monatige, hybride Programm. Was dabei entsteht oder nicht entsteht, werden die Begegnung zeigen.
