40 years ago, about 70 artists met in the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart for a month, worked and lived together. Boris Nieslony from the Künstlerhaus Hamburg invited them, Ulrich Bernhardt, who directed the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, arranged the space and funding, the concept was developed between Hamburg, Stuttgart and artists from Büro Berlin. What united was the shared idea that it was more about processes than about products. And although the idea of a publication was already on the table in 1981, the 30-day encounter could not be captured between two book covers until today.

Along the notions of work, communication, process and space, the publication for the first time scholarly explores the events, frictions and actions surrounding the 1981 KONZIL at the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. Texts by renowned authors meet the archival materials of the one month-long artists' meeting that laid the foundation for the International Performance Art Archive: Archive boxes full of documents, photographs, performance relics, video recordings as well as interviews with participants will give a comprehensive picture of what is called the KONZIL. Looking from the present, the publication takes up the questions by the KONZIL and reflects on its position in art history, performance history and theory.

Vor 40 Jahre trafen sich in Stuttgart bis zu 70 Künstler*innen für einen Monat, arbeiteten und lebten zusammen im dortigen Künstlerhaus. Eingeladen hatte Boris Nieslony vom Hamburger Künstlerhaus, die Räume und Anträge besorgte Ulrich Bernhardt, der das Künstlerhaus Stuttgart leitete, das Konzept entstand zwischen Hamburg, Stuttgart und den Künstlern von Büro Berlin. Die Künstler einte die Überzeugung, dass es mehr um die Prozesse, denn um Produkte geht. Und obgleich 1981 bereits die Idee einer Publikation im Raum stand, bis heute ließen sich das 30tägige Aufeinandertreffen nicht zwischen zwei Buchdeckel pressen.

Zum 40jährigen Jubiläum des KONZILs wird der Versuch unternommen, die historischen Dokumente in einer Publikation aufzuarbeiten. Entlang der Begriffe Arbeit, Kommunikation, Prozess und Raum erforscht sie erstmals wissenschaftlich die Ereignisse, Reibungen und Aktionen rund um das KONZIL 1981 im Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. Texte namhafter Autor*innen treffen auf die Archivmaterialien des einmonatigen Künstlertreffens: Archivschachteln voller Dokumente, Fotografien, Performance-Relikte, Videoaufnahmen. Zudem werden Interviews mit den Teilnehmer*innen von damals die gelebte Erinnerung bewahren und die kontroversen Interpretationen dessen, was KONZIL genannt wird, einfangen.

Mit Blick auf die Gegenwart greift die Publikation die Fragen des KONZILs auf und reflektiert dessen Position in der Kunstgeschichte, Performancegeschichte und Theorie.
