A lot has been achieved – much more needs to be done.

Since 2016, the International Performance Art Archive is located in the Atelierhaus Quartier am Hafen in Cologne. The archive is open for continuous artistic and academic research and is organised by Boris Nieslony and his supporters on a voluntary basis. In 2021, a crowdfunding was launched to cover the rent for the archive. Since then, international supporters - from Canada, Italy to India and many other parts of the world - have contributed to securing the archive. LINK

However, the situation of the archive remains unstable. Last year, a team of performance artists and researchers was brought together to create solutions for the future that secure the existence of the International Performance Art Archive – and to guarantee its open, vibrant space for lived exchange and productive work that is so central to its mission.

The living archive BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE requires:

— A reasonably paid position: the archive has become too extensive and important to continue to be run solely on a voluntary basis. A permanent contact person for the research of artists and academics, for networks and organisations, for archiving new acquisitions and recording the collections, for issuing new funding requests and imagining the utopian for performance art.

— Maintaining and reinforcing the institutional and academic cooperation of the International Performance Art Archive; locally with the Museum Library Cologne (Museumsbibliothek Köln), the Central Archive of the International Art Trade Cologne (Zentralarchiv des Internationalen Kunsthandels Köln), the universities such as art academies in Cologne, Bonn or Düsseldorf.

— A steadily growing specialised library of 10,000 publications, artists' books and journals currently lies in wait to be recorded by libraries. Once recorded, online research is ensured.

— Making the specific knowledge of the archive on various aspects of performance art effective in lectures, texts, symposia.

— How can the archive be carried into the future? A spatial expansion is essential in the long term. A place for researchers of the arts and humanities to sleep, a place for performers to do practical research with the archives and transform knowledge, a place for discussion and encounters. How to transform the International Performance Art Archive into a centre of competence for performance art?

— To remain an open place of exchange, of encounter via a table with coffee or red wine.

Seit 2016 befindet sich das Internationale Performance Art Archiv im Atelierhaus Quartier am Hafen in Köln. Das Archiv steht für die kontinuierliche künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Forschung offen und wird von Boris Nieslony und seinen Unterstützer:innen ehrenamtlich organisiert. Ziel bleibt das lebendige Archiv: ein offener Raum für den gelebten Austausch, die Forschung und Zusammenarbeit.

Das lebendige Archiv BLACK KIT | DIE SCHWARZE LADE bedarf:

— Eine fair bezahlte Stelle: Das Archiv ist zu umfangreich und bedeutend geworden, um weiter ausschließlich ehrenamtlich geführt zu werden. Ein*e feste Ansprechpartner*in für forschende Künstler*innen wie Wissenschaftler*innen, für Netzwerke und Organisationen, zur Archivierung von Neuzugängen und Erfassung der Bestände, zur Stellung neuer Anträge und Ersinnung des Utopischen für die Performance Art

— Aufrechterhaltung und Intensivierung der institutionellen und wissenschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit des Internationalen Performance Art Archivs; vor Ort mit der Museumsbibliothek Köln, dem Zentralarchiv des Internationalen Kunsthandels Köln, den Universitäten wie Kunsthochschulen in Köln, Bonn oder Düsseldorf

— Eine stetig wachsende Fachbibliothek von 10.000 Publikationen, Künstlerbüchern und Zeitschriften wartet auf die bibliothekarische Erfassung. Nach der Erfassung soll eine Online-Recherche gewährleistet werden.

— Digitalisieren und Bewahren der Videobänder, Tonbandaufnahmen, Schallplatten, Dias etc.

— Das spezifische Wissen des Archivs in Vorträgen, Texten, Symposien zu einzelnen Problemzonen der Performance Art wirksam machen.

— Wie kann das Archiv lebendig in die Zukunft getragen werden? Eine räumliche Erweiterung ist langfristig unabdingbar. Ein Schlafplatz für Forschende der Künste und Wissenschaften, ein Ort für Performer*innen zur praktischen Forschung mit den Archivalien und Wissenstransformation, ein Ort der Diskussion und Begegnung. Wie das Internationale Performance Art Archiv in ein Kompetenzzentrum der Performance Art transformieren?

— Ein offener Ort des Austausches, der Begegnung, des Tisches mit Kaffee und Rotwein bleiben
